Tzu Chi International Medical Association – TIMA
About TIMA
One of Tzu Chi’s missions is Medicine and in 1996, to further this goal, Tzu Chi founded TIMA – Tzu Chi International Medical Association. It is a group of healthcare professionals providing medical services to the neediest people at minimal or no cost to the patients. The group provides consultation, surgery and other forms of treatment with the emphasis of “care” to the patients and not just curing the disease.
TIMA Worldwide
As a private non-profit organization under the mother organization Tzu Chi Foundation, TIMA largely relies on support from the public through donations and fundraising activities. TIMA is not affiliated with any government assistance or political groups. At present, TIMA has 17 branches in 9 countries worldwide: Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Philippines, United States, Paraguay, and Brazil (and currently in the hopes of forming a group in Canada).
There are more than 2000 members all over the world consisting of medical professionals and administrative staff in TIMA. TIMA provides medical services through free clinics that operate regularly or through medical outreach missions in suburban/rural communities.
“Transcending the boundaries of religion, race, and nationality, the spirit of Great Love for all is rooted in every place around the world.” This was the affirmation that the judges of Taiwan’s Medical Dedication Award gave in recognition of TIMA.
More than Medical Services
Aside from providing cure for the patients, healthcare professionals and volunteers also provide emotional assistance the patients may need, elevating the services provided to both physical and spiritual healing.
In addition to providing cure and care, TIMA also hopes to build healthy communities by providing basic preventive health education. This can be done through health fairs and medical seminars that are open to public.
During major disasters, TIMA members from different regions work together to deliver aids to the victims. International medical missions are assembled quickly and efficiently in order to offer services to the needy in an effective, safe, respectful, and compassionate manner.
