News Update of Tzu Chi's Relief Efforts in Haiti

2010/02/11

On February 8, Tzu Chi volunteers kicked off the relief work program in the vicinity of the distribution sites (at St. Mary Church and Impact of God Church).  For the initial phase, survivors work to clean up the surrounding areas of the city of Tabarre in exchange for food and cash from Tzu Chi.  The relief work program not only provides immediate needs to the survivors, it also provide hope and love. Survivors/participants in the program work from 7am to 11am, and Tzu Chi provide hot meals to them, and they can bring meals back home for their family.  Each participant in the program also receive wages, which is to be paid on a weekly basis.

There are 14 teams in this program, each team has about 10 to 11 members. Each team has a team leader, two teams are pair under the care of one leader, and then there is a head leader for the 14 teams of about 150 people. A very organized group of workers! Every worker is very happy that they have a job. A priest from a church in United States (Steve Saintus) said that: “We are very capable to work, but there is no job.” He said he was very grateful that Tzu Chi volunteers introduce the “Relief Work Program”. He also said that: “For many years, we are getting subsidy from other countries, what we really need in Haiti is the opportunity to work.”

It is one month after the devastating earthquake struck Haiti. Hundreds of thousands of lives were lost, but in the wake of the disaster, the compassion of millions of people was awakened. Many people have contributed their efforts, money, or prayers and blessings for the victims and the survivors.
